How do you choose the right rug?! In this blog, we'll explain how a few key factors can help you work out which rug is right for you! With so much choice out there, you'll naturally want to be sure you're bringing home the right one!

Choose the right rug with these tips

Of course, the perfect rug ultimately comes down to your own taste: what do you like, and which colours make you feel at home? But there are also a few other factors you shouldn't forget during your selection process.

#1 The size of your rug

Perhaps the most obvious factor. Yet we often see 'house tour' style photos where a rug that's far too small has been laid down. It's not just impractical, it also makes your home look a lot smaller. It looks so much better when the rug is larger and acts almost like a tray for your furniture, tying the pieces together. A rug that's too small and only sits under your coffee table really looks a lot less stylish.

#2 Type of flooring

Where are you going to lay your new rug? Do you have underfloor heating, for example? Not every rug is suitable for a floor with underfloor heating. The type of flooring is an important factor when choosing your new rug. Do you have a very smooth floor, or a tiled floor with rough grouting? Then we'd really recommend an anti-slip underlay to protect your rug. You don't want the tiles showing through your rug.

#3 Purpose of the rug

Will your rug go in the bedroom? Or perhaps under a dining table? In your bedroom you might want a high-pile rug so your feet stay warm when you get up, whereas under the dining table you'll probably want to be able to easily vacuum up crumbs. That's why, for under the dining table, we recommend a 'flat' rug, in other words one without pile.

So think ahead about what function the rug needs to serve:

• Look and styling, for example in the living room
• Warmth and softness underfoot, for example in the bedroom
• Sound dampening, for example in an apartment
• A soft surface, for example for the children's room

#4 Rug material

Some people prefer a natural material rug, such as a wool rug or a jute rug. But what if you have allergies? No problem! The technology behind synthetic rugs is so good that a polypropylene or synthetic-fibre rug can be just as soft. Natural rugs are generally more expensive than synthetic ones.

Natural materials can also only be used indoors. Synthetic materials such as polyamide and polyester barely fade and can often be used outdoors too.
